Summary: The truck is a Class 8 semi-truck designed specifically for long-haul transportation.
On May 21, Volvo announced the production of its first “mass-producible” autonomous truck in collaboration with Aurora. This truck is based on Volvo’s new generation VNL series and is designed as a Class 8 semi-truck specifically for long-haul transportation, equipped with Aurora’s L4 autonomous driving system.
The collaboration between the two companies began in 2018 to develop autonomous truck solutions. The truck has already undergone real-world scenario validation on public roads, with Aurora having driven over 1.5 million miles on commercial roads. Aurora plans to deploy 20 fully autonomous trucks this year and expand to around 100 trucks by 2025, ultimately selling them to other companies. Additionally, Aurora has partnered with German automotive supplier Continental to plan large-scale deployment of autonomous trucks by 2027.
